Religion or Relationship

Asking the question, “Are you religious?”, seems to be a typical conversation starter when meeting new people. A valid questions to learn more about a persons values and character, but what is religion really? If I’m a religious person does that mean I have to associate myself with a group of people or put constraints on how I live my life? If I’m religious does that mean I have a road map to life with rules and regulations on how to get to my destination? The answer to those questions is NO. I don’t have everything figured out and my life is not mapped out for me because of what I believe.

See, I don’t claim to be religious because religion only causes separation. I do claim to follow Jesus! The Bible is my handbook to life, for guidance. Guidance is different then restrictions and that is one of the most wonderful things about following God. He gives us free will. I make my own path in life and I get to make mistakes because they are my choices. Not someone controlling what decisions I do or don’t make. Christ desires a relationship, a pure intimate relationship where we can tell him all about us even though He already knows. That’s the insane part to me. The creator of everything cares about you and I on such a deep level that he just wants to know about us from our perspective. It may seem simple but think of it this way. Take a couple that has been together for years. The man has an awful addiction to alcohol that sends him in to anger filled rages. The women on the other hand is so scared to speak up because of the mans rage that she just keeps up the act that love is still there. If the man is forcing the women to love him through his anger is it really love at all? The reason Jesus wants a relationship with us and not religion is because it’s our choice!

I know your heart may be hardened by past experiences with what you thought it meant to follow Jesus. Dare to consider your thoughts from religion to relationship and give it one more chance. God is standing at the door knocking waiting for you to answer and it’s your choice to answer or not. He loves you and trust me when you truly let Him in you will never look back!

Revelations 3:20 “Look at me. I stand at the door. I Knock. If you hear me call and open the door, I’ll come right in and sit down to supper with you. Conquerors will sit alongside me at the head table, just as I, having conquered, took the place of honor at the side of my father. That’s my gift to the conquerors!
